James Donald Bird- Saying Good-bye

Kevin's Grandpa Bird passed away on January 20, 2012. It was a very emotional time leading up to his passing as well as the days following. Grandpa was in the hospital several times over the holidays, with complications from his diabetes. He wanted to be home and his health deteriorated over the next weeks. We were able to go and visit him often and Cory had developed a love for him and going to his house. Cory loved to raid Grandpa's candy dishes, and I'll never forget last Halloween when Cory trick-or-treated at Grandpa's house and the two of them sat on the couch watching "The Hulk".

It has been sad trying to explain to Cory that he won't be seeing Grandpa anymore (at least for a long while). Cory has been really sweet through it all though. Cory commented that Grandpa was with Heavenly Father now and that he wasn't sick anymore.
A few hours before Grandpa passed, Cory was able to hold his hand and tell him he loved him and say good-bye. He whispered because he said he didn't want to wake Grandpa up. My heart has been full of appreciation for Grandpa's role in our lives. I am grateful that because of him, we are able to have the family we have today. I'm sad that Cory will not know him better and have time to create more memories with him, but am thankful for my faith in the Lord and my deep belief that families can be together forever.

My wonderful in-laws gave me a sewing machine for Christmas. When my mother-in-law handed it to me, the first words out of my mouth were, "You have faith me!" I'm excited to put it to use, but I have a feeling it may take me awhile to get the hang of it.

Christmas this year was a 3 day event. On December 23rd, we attended an extended family party hosted by Grandma and Grandpa Thatcher. We had a wonderful time visiting with family and watched a video of the Nativity. Cory was very concerned that the Roman soldiers were going to hurt Mary and Joseph. Grandpa Bird was able to come, even though he has been struggling with some health problems. He has been in and out of the hospital a few times in December, and we were glad he was able to be there with us.

On Christmas Eve, Holly hosted a party at her house. All of the kids dressed in their pajamas and we had breakfast for dinner. We frosted and decorated cookies for Santa and watched "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". Next, Grandma Bird and Kaden played their Ukuleles and we sang Christmas songs. We ended the night with a pinata. It was so fun and everyone loved it!

Christmas morning started early for Cory and Kevin, and even earlier for me. I didn't realize how excited I was, but I was wide awake at 4am anxiously waiting for Cory to wake up. Cory woke up to Kevin's dismay at 5:15am, and Cory and I were able to drag Kevin out of bed by 5:30am to start Christmas!

By far, Cory's favorite present was his "big" Jessie doll. He hasn't put her down!

Before heading to church, we gave Cory his gift from his Grandma and Grandpa Whitesell. A ticket to Disney World!

It was a great Christmas, but my favorite part was spending time together. The three of us don't get a lot of time together, and I enjoyed spending time with my two favorite people the most!

Pheasant Hunting at the 4 Mile Hunt Club

The three of us just got home from a fun (and freezing cold) day of pheasant hunting. Kevin's brother Mike and a bunch of guys he works with headed down to the 4 Mile Hunting Club with our dog Chance and Mike's dog Lady. This was Cory's first time officially hunting, and he did great. It wasn't until he was starving, wind burned and frozen that he started to ask to go back to the car. He had a great time and met a little boy named Porter who he called "Quarter" all day. On the drive home Cory ate more than I think I've ever seen him eat at a time. He downed a PB and J sandwich, some mixed nuts, an apple, a bag of Cheetos, gold fish crackers, and half a granola bar.

Last weekend we drove up Diamond Fork Canyon to take Cory shooting for his first time. Cory has admired Kevin's childhood Red Ryder BB gun for months and was so excited to get to finally shoot it. It has been really cold here and we haven't spent much time outside, so we all enjoyed the fresh air. We hiked around, shot at some bottles and old clay pigeons, and even threw rocks down at a frozen stream.

Cory was in his crib on a "time out" this morning when all of a sudden I hear the pitter patter of little feet running through the kitchen. He's saying "Got out of my bed all by myself!" over and over again. I didn't know what to do or say. Cory's crib has always been his sanctuary and my saving grace. It's the one place I can contain him. I knew this day was coming, but I'm so unprepared. I asked him if he could show me how he did it, and like a pro he swung his leg up over the side and gracefully slid down to the floor again with a big smile on his face. Here we go... another chapter of motherhood has begun.

Colorado Deer Hunt

Kevin drew a Colorado deer tag this year, and went for a week long hunt with his friend Brandon and Brandon's son Luke. It was a very physical hunt, with a lot of hiking, but they were able to find a cheep hotel to stay in at night. The weather was really cold, so Kevin was glad they took the hotel route.
They saw 2 bucks the first day they were there (Monday), and were hopeful of finding some nice mature deer. On Thursday, Kevin hiked to a spot to glass, and spotted what he thought could be a nice deer. It was bedded down, so he was a little nervous to take the shot. He did and hit it from about 260 yards out. It is a cool 30.5 inch character buck with a couple cheaters.

Brandon was able to get his deer on Friday evening and they decided to make a late night of it and drive home in order to have all day Saturday with their families. Here are some pictures:

Cory's Thank You

Cory loves his spider man snow boots and would live in them if we let him. Kevin has really tried to teach him they are for the snow and that when it snows, he can wear them. Well, it snowed here this week and Cory was the happiest little boy ever. He would look out the window all morning (he wakes up really early) and then run through the house yelling that the lights were on outside once the sun came up. He knows I won't let him go out and play until the "lights are on" outside. I've been sick, so I'd bundle him up and send him out while I stayed curled up in a blanket on the couch watching him from the window. He just stomps snow and pokes at it with a stick until I make him come in.
The other night when I was at work, Kevin had him outside playing in what was left of the snow and he see's Cory look up to the sky and say "thank you, thank you, thank you." Kevin asked him who he was thanking, and Cory said, "I'm thanking the clouds for the snow." It was so cute. I've taught Cory about rain coming from the clouds and he was smart enough to infer that snow also comes from the clouds. He is such a fun and smart little boy!

Halloween was made for Cory. This kid loves costumes, pirates, bones, anything scary and candy. The morning of our church's trunk or treat, Cory told me he wanted to dress up like Jack Sparrow. Since we already had the monkey costume, I convinced him he wanted to be Captain Barbosa's pet monkey "Jack" instead.

Farm Fest - Payson, UT

My friend Tiffany invited Cory and me to Farm Fest in Payson, UT. The weather was nice and they had a bunch of fun stuff for the kids. The only negative part was that Cory and Graycee (Tiffany's niece) kept getting "in trouble" for catching chickens in the petting zoo. The 8 year old left to supervise the petting zoo just couldn't handle Cory and Graycee actually touching the animals in the "petting" zoo. Ha ha..it's funny to think about it now. Cory would grab a chicken and run from the girl.
Cory and Graycee enjoyed the hay maze, but when they couldn't find their way out, they just climbed over a wall or two. I think Cory's favorite activities were the bounce castle and the inflatable slide. He had a blast!

Antelope Hunt - Wyoming

Kevin went with a group of friends to Wyoming earlier this month on an antelope hunt. The weather was beautiful the week before they left and completely treacherous while they were there. The wind gusts were extremely strong and it snowed and rained almost the entire time.
They stayed in a dumpy motel with unreliable heaters and metal walls. Kevin described it as an old metal work shop converted into rooms. Considering how bad the weather was, I think they were all thankful they hadn't camped and had some sort of shelter and heat. Here are some pictures of the successful hunters:

Cotton Candy ~ Utah State Fair

On Skype the other day, Grandpa Whitesell told Cory that he was going to fly to Utah and buy him some cotton candy at the fair. Well, Cory had no idea what cotton candy actually was but hasn't quit talking about it since. "Papa buy Cory cotton candy?" has been a frequent question around the house since then.

So... when mom and dad arrived in UT, Cory wanted to know when he was getting some of this cotton candy stuff. We went to the Utah State fair, and the first thing Grandpa Whitesell did, was hand Cory some money for cotton candy. Mom and Dad Whitesell just came for a visit. When they pulled up Cory went running outside yelling "Papa Papa!" and ran into my dad's arms and melted into him. Cory didn't leave my dad's side for at least half of an hour.

Thank goodness for pictures and Skype! Cory not only recognizes his Grandma and Grandpa Whitesell, he feels totally comfortable and safe with them. I do have to admit that he can't seem to quit calling mom - Grandma Thatcher (his great-grandma's name), but it's still sweet because he does know and enjoy his Grandma Whitesell, even if he can't quite keep her last name straight.

Right after Dad arrived he fell asleep, but Cory never left his side. It was so sweet.

Labor Day Weekend Fun

Kevin and I bought the "Pass of All Passes" and have enjoyed going to 7 Peaks with Cory these past 2 weeks. Since they closed on Labor Day for the season, we went every chance we could. Cory loves going down "The Cave" water slide and playing in the wave pool. Over the extended Labor Day weekend we also enjoyed time as a family, working in the yard and house, and the highlight was going up Hobble Creek Canyon for dinner with Grandma and Grandpa Bird.

Cory found this snake in the yard and brought it to me. My skin was crawling for hours. Luckily it was dead!

Cory thought it was funny to run with his nose on the carpet (like Sadie Chihuahua) and he ended up with a bad rug burn.

These pictures speak for themselves. Cory loves playing games on the Fisher Price website and can even pick out the “A” and “M” keys on the keyboard now. One of the games will show him an awesome alligator when he hits “A” and a silly monkey when he hits “M” so he mastered those two quickly since they are his favorites.

Our public library offers "Music and Movement" classes for 1-3 year olds. I finally took Cory this week and he loved it! I have been dragging him to my Zumba classes so much lately that he kept saying it was "Cory's Zumba" class. He was so fun to watch. He was more into interacting with the kids than he was into listening to his teacher and following directions. Cory and I always march around our house and use commands like "halt" and "about face", so he was totally confused by the teacher's instruction for them to freeze, until I pulled him aside and told him freeze means halt. He had no trouble with "freezing" after I cleared that up for him.

I'm not officially starting to potty train or anything, but Cory is showing more and more signs that he is ready to ditch the diapers. Just to introduce the subject to him, I've borrowed some "Potty" DVDs from the library. As I was on the phone with Verizon the "Go Potty Go!" song was blaring in the background and I see Cory sitting on the living room floor holding his "big boy underwear" (which he has never worn) and sitting on his Elmo toilet seat (which has also never been used). As I got off the phone I was thinking... he's really getting into this going to the potty stuff. Just as I walked into the living room I got a big whiff of grossness coming from Cory's diaper and was yanked back to reality. The potty training thing is going to stink. Literally.

Cory loves going to the pool, but I don't think anything can beat the "splash pad". Because he can't swim, and I'm too cheap to invest in a dependable flotation device for him, I'm kind of a stress case at the pool. I'm able to relax and enjoy myself more at the splash pads and he enjoys the extra freedom I give him.

The last month has been so nice. We have been able to spend so much time outside and have enjoyed visiting with so many friends. Every once in a while I feel myself starting to brace for the oncoming winter, but I'm trying so hard to just imagine an endless summer.

2 Year Well Child Check Up

Cory finally went in for his 2yr Well Child Check. Before we went, I had him practice saying things like:

“I don’t want to die doctor!”

“Thank you doctor.”

“Turn and cough doctor.”

“Hi Doctor Anderson.”

“Please save me doctor.”

When it came down to it, he only said “Hi doctor and thank you doctor” but I had a good laugh in the preparation.

Mapleton Pioneer Day 5K

Mile 1- I was cussing myself. "Why do I do this to myself? This is miserable. I hate running. I've always known I hate it so why do I keep doing this?"
Then Mile 2- "I can totally do this. I think I can beat my best time. Oh dang that guy pushing his 4 kids in a stroller is trying to pass me! Maybe if I stick my foot out a bit he'll trip."
Mile 3- "This is so miserable but I've pushed hard so far; I bet if I keep pushing through I'll beat my best time. Are those people done and running back up the course already? Do they think they're funny? Will they think they're cool when I punch them in the face? Where is the freaking finish line!?"

Running is so hard for me for many reasons but one is that I HATE not being the best at something. I have zero natural talent for running, but I guess that's where the real challenge comes from for me. In the end that is what makes me love it!

I did finish the race, and I did beat my personal best time. No runners were harmed by me during or after the race. I apologize for the appearance of violent-angry Jess in this post. I try to suppress her but sometimes that crazy old biddy get's loose.

Now that the sun comes up and the birds are singing in unison with Cory's early wake up time, I don't mind starting my days at 6am. (Just one more perk to it being summer.) There are quite a few advantages to being up early:

When I exercise really early in the morning, my shadow is very tall and skinny and that makes me happy

We go to the park before there are a million kids and I get some peace and quiet while Cory plays
Wal-Mart turns into a pleasant shopping experience instead of a living hell on earth
By 10 I've usually worked out, showered, eaten breakfast, cleaned the house and am ready for an adventure.
I never get woken up by early telephone calls (But beware.. I've been known to call people early, not realizing that some folks haven't been up for 2+ hours yet.)

In the past I've complained incessantly about having a child that refuses to sleep in, but after 2 years, I think I've finally learned to embrace it.

Keeping Cool Under Pressure

I feel this intense urge to do everything "summer" possible. I feel this dread creeping up inside of me with every day that brings me closer to another winter in Utah, and I will not go into fall wishing I would have soaked up more sunshine. I've been doing my workouts outside, we've been playing in every water source I can find, and I'm making sure to enjoy all of the yummy garden veggies and summer fruits. Camping at Jolley's Ranch

Our little family of three "camped" at Jolley's Ranch, up Hobble Creek Canyon for 2 nights. I don't know if it was official camping since we slept in a camp trailer with water and power, but I didn't shower for 2 days, so it felt pretty official to me. We went on some hikes, Cory threw about 8,378 rocks into Hobble Creek, we ate tin foil dinners, our friends Tiffany and Kevin brought their niece Graycee up for dinner and s'mores one night, and Cory acquired more battle scars in 2 days than he's received in the last 2 years combined!

He sat in this spot with this random little girl for like 45min and threw rock after rock after rock.

Cory played so hard from the time we got up there until the time we left. He ran across this bridge over and over. He was so happy! I finally had to snag him to take a picture with me, but you can tell he wasn’t too happy about it.

Unfortunately, all that running led to him getting hurt. He was running towards the camp trailer, and went head first in between the stairs. The grip on the bottom stair acted as sand paper and gave him bad road rash on his chin. Now he looks like he has a goatee.

The second day of our adventure, we woke up and went on a hike. It’s a good thing I took the first aid kit because Cory fell and skinned his knee. This kid falls constantly whenever we go hiking, but he has been lucky in the past to not draw blood. Not so lucky this time!

Other than the scraped knee, we had a nice hike up the Wardsworth trail. It’s a very pretty hike with lots of water coming down. Of course Cory threw rocks and Kevin and I worked hard to keep him from falling in. The kid has no fear.

As we took this picture... Cory decided to run across a log, to the other side of the creek "all by his onesies" as Jack Sparrow would say. You really can't take your eyes off of this kid for a second!

The camp trailer was awesome and I can’t imagine “camping” with Cory without it. We were able to hang out in the air-conditioned trailer when we were tired of being out in the sun. We watched two of my favorite movies, Swiss Family Robinson and Mary Poppins, and snacked on Swedish Fish and licorice. The first night Cory slept pretty soundly, but woke up for the day at 5:45am. We were the only ones playing at the playground at 6:30 in the morning but we’re use to our little early bird. The second night Cory decided he was done with the pack’n play and ended up in our bed for the first time since he was an infant. I have to admit I enjoyed snuggling with him.

Sometimes I can be so hard on myself. Possibly like many of you, I am quick to find fault with myself... quick to dwell on my short comings and mistakes. I am also slow to recognize the things I do well. I'm so busy thinking about how I could have done something better, that I don't congratulate myself for the things I did well. A few months ago I started writing down all of my little successes each day, so that I could hopefully feel like I was a success as a wife, mother, sister, friend, human being, etc. It has definitely increased my happiness and improved my view of myself. So if you're struggling today... stop and think about all of the things you've done well and have a happy day!

Stewart Falls

Cory and I just got home from hiking Stewart Falls with my friend Tiffany, her mom Rachelle, and Tiff's niece Graycee. It was 4 miles round trip and was pretty slow going since our speed was about 2 "2 year olds" per hour. I was really impressed with the kids though. Cory pretty much walked the entire way to the falls. I've never seen so much water coming down the falls before. We had an unseasonably cold spring with a lot of rain and had a ridiculously deep snow pack from winter, so all of the rivers and streams are either over flowing or flowing to capacity. The falls were beautiful and the mist was shooting out over 50 yards (maybe more?). Unfortunately Cory had his first encounter with the stinging nettle plant. He brushed it with the outside of his hand and immediately whelps popped up all over his little hand. Other than the stinging nettle and a few falls (no pun intended!), it was a fun day!

Holly and I took the boys to a park in Spanish Fork that has the most fun playground equipment and a really fun splash pad. The kids had a blast and best of all... it was free!

Cory didn't stop running around from the moment we got there until the moment we left. He had so much fun!

Redneck Lawn Party

Kevin loves "shed hunting" and accumulates a lot of antlers over time. They are actually worth quite a bit of money and he decided it's time to sell some more. What started as him getting them out and organizing them turned into quite the spectacle with our yard covered in antlers and Cory lugging them around in his diaper. It was a really hot day so we pulled out the classy plastic baby pool and took a dip. We had a really fun afternoon lounging in the baby pool as a family.

On Saturday I went up to Salt Lake to participate in a RunnerCross race. I was in serious need of an outing/adventure of some sort so I am so glad I was able to go. My bro-in-law Jorge was catering the event and I was able to run on the Costa Vida's team. I did the 3 person relay with Jorge and his co-worker Dillon. We each ran a 5k on a motocross track that contained all kinds of crazy obstacles. Between our relay legs, we would go and serve smothered Costa Vida burritos as we were smothered in mud. It was a fun experience that I would do again in the future. I was really excited to get the pictures from Jorge and post them, until I actually witnessed "runner Jess". I'll be frank..... "runner Jess" is not near as sexy as "cleaned up, dressed up and make-up'd Jess", but I won't deny you the pictures, since it's kind of hard to describe the race without them. Kevin was teasing me because I was smiling in almost every single picture. What can I say?? It was fun! However, enjoy these because I doubt "runner Jess" will be making additional appearances on this blog.

Happy 4th of July!

We held to tradition and went to the Provo parade Monday morning. Cory enjoyed the first half and then was done. The two of us went and walked around, playing hide-and-seek in a nearby bank drive- through. It was memorable. After the parade Cory and I took a 3 hour nap while Kevin helped his dad finish building a storage shed. That evening we enjoyed a BBQ at Mom and Dad Bird’s. I made some dang good kabobs and Grandma Thatcher made super yummy chocolate cupcakes. After dinner we went and helped Grandma and Grandpa Thatcher gather eggs and milk the cow, and then finished the night off with fireworks in the rain. What a day!

Kevin’s brother Mike bought some awesome rockets and we were lucky enough to go and watch the launchings. The first rocket was impressive until it decided to land in the middle of a huge field full of thistle and foxtails. Poor Mike and Kevin put in a valiant effort trying to find it, but eventually gave up and had red itchy legs, covered in noxious weeds. I had to throw Kevin’s socks away they were so covered in foxtails. The 2^nd and 3^rd launches were much more successful and we were able to retrieve the rockets both times. It was pretty hot, but the kids still had fun, and we adults would be lying if we said we didn’t enjoy it too!

The first 3 years of my married life were truly blissful. I often worried and wondered when the trials would come. I should have spent those years enjoying the lull from trials, because they inevitably came. (Note to self –complain less and just be happy.) This year has been freakin’ hard and I have had to work consistently to see the blessings that came along with the hard times. I keep coming back to Proverbs 3: 5-6 and the answer is to always abandon my own hopes and desires and seek the Lord’s will. Look upward more than outward and love the inward as He does.

Every morning Cory would wake up with the sun and beg to go play with the kids. He would start saying all of their names until we would take him downstairs. Once he made it downstairs, he started begging to go swim in the pool. He loved playing with the kids on the beach, but his favorite thing to do was play in the pool. He learned how to jump to one of us from the side and was so brave that it made me quite nervous.

Myrtle Beach 2011

Every year the Whitesell Clan heads to the beach for a week of fun in the sun. This year was no different. Kevin, Cory and I flew to Charlotte, NC and then drove the 4 hours to Myrtle Beach. At times it was a lot of work, but Kevin and I agreed that this was our favorite year at the beach so far. Cory was old enough to do some really fun things, and it was so fun to see him having such a great time.

The highlight of our trip was going to the Pirates Voyage dinner show. Cory was enthralled for the entire 1 1/2 hour show and would yell "yo ho" or "arrrgh" and got an A+ in audience participation. I've been to many dinner shows from Vegas to the beach, but this show was by far the most entertaining and had the best food!

There were a lot of pirates interacting with the guests as we were waiting for the show to start. This guy was really enjoying his job!

Cory was exhausted by the time we got him home, but he was so happy! He was still singing and talking about the Pirate show when we put him to bed.

Some of the most memorable moments were the ones hanging out in the beach houses. There is really no way to describe what it is like to be on vacation with over 60 people and 6 families and all of their kids sharing a house for a week. I love being that close to all of my family!

After spending a lot of time as a great big happy extended family, Kevin and I decided to spend our last night on a little date with just our little family of three. Second only to the Pirate Show, it was my favorite night at the beach. We ate dinner at Johnny Rockets and then went to Alligator Adventure.

Art City Days ~ Nestle 5K

I should have known I was going to love doing the Nestle 5K, from the moment I picked up my race packet and it had candy bars in it. The other 5K's I've done this Spring were pretty small as far as attendance, but there were over 2,000 participants in this one. I think it made it so much better and it makes me want to run in an even bigger race. My friend Tiffany met me at my house bright and early and we headed over to the race; I think we were both kinda tired and grumpy, but by the end we were both happy we had done it.

Tiffany was cracking up because she just bought her husband a drill a couple of weeks ago!

The poor gal' just ran a 5K in 20 min 45 seconds and then she wins this mammoth case of water to tote around. I guess she got an arm workout in too!

Holly is an amazing and dedicated runner. She trains and runs in long distance races, but was still able to come and place 5th in her age group. Whoo hoo!

I held out hope that they would call my number for something all the way until the very end, but no such luck this time. I did win a classy NAPA racing hat at the last race though! Can't forget about that!

A Pirate's Life for Cory Boy

Cory recently turned 2! He is such a fun little boy and he keeps us smiling. He loves all sorts of weaponry from swords, knifes, guns, bows even to Captain Hooks's famous hook. I wanted to have a Pirate themed party for my little man, just so I could hear him say, "pirate" "hook" "cap'in" "gator" "gun" "shoot you" and "arrrhhhh!" just to name a few. We met Uncle George and Aunt Pat at Texas Road House for dinner and Cory was too wound up to sit through the meal so I took my little buccaneer outside to burn off some energy.

He was so excited and hyper when his guests began to arrive. He knew this shin dig was for him and he rocks being the center of attention. I must confess for the last month we've been practicing singing happy birthday, and then letting him blow out a real candle, so he was a total pro!

I so enjoyed having my sweet mama come and visit. She is so beautiful inside and out, and I hope to be 1/2 the mother to Cory that she was to me. I loved watching her get to know Cory, for he is my life. It's a million times harder being so far from her than I ever imagined, and I will never take our time together for granted.

These pictures may look pretty awkward, but Kevin is actually looking for elk, big horn sheep and other wildlife... not at our neighbors. Kevin has a knack for spotting even the most camouflaged animals with his spotting scope or binoculars. Cory wants to be just like Kevin and frequently looks out the window and says "buck" or "elk." I love these 2 outdoor enthusiasts and I love that we have a beautiful mountain range right outside our house.

We had a fun Easter. I made paper Easter eggs to decorate our big kitchen window with, and of course we enjoyed the Easter egg hunts. I think I was more into the Springville city egg hunt than Cory was. Sometimes I just can't help myself when it comes to a good competition. I was fine until a bunch of moms started edging in front of us. It was game on then. I picked up Cory, threw a couple of elbows and ran to the far end of the field so Cory could have a premo spot to fill up his basket. I really hope I outgrow this childish behavior one day.

My last trip to Wal-Mart was quite exciting. We had made it through the store and through the check out line, when Cory decided to dash into the men's restroom. I'll admit it; I panicked. I should have just run in after him but after 27 years of the men's restroom being taboo to me... I stood at the door and begged Cory to come out. Images of those strange urinal things flooded my mind. I really freaked out when I realized they were at Cory's eye level. He wouldn't stick his hand in one of them... would he!? The cashiers started to snicker. Bystanders stretched their necks to get a better look. And I was the ridiculous mom yelling into the men's bathroom. Thankfully a heaven sent man asked if I wanted him to go and get Cory. I stood with my tail between my legs as this kind stranger retrieved my kid. Good times.

Spring Break 2011

I got two days off of work for a "Spring Break" since I work at a school, and it was great. I had all of these intense plans, like putting in a garden, deep cleaning the entire house, etc etc, none of which I got to, but.... I did get a wonderful pedicure, my car detailed, spent time with some of my nieces and nephews, and of course spent more time with Cory and Kevin. Here are a few pictures from Thanksgiving Point. My sister-in-law Megan and I took our kids and 2 of our nephews to the Farm Land up there and had a great day!

The kids were so tired when we were all done! Cory even fell asleep on Megan's couch for a little while.

On Saturday, Cory and I hiked the Y with Katie. The weather was great for hiking and Cory did pretty well in the backpack.

My First 5K

Last Saturday my friend Tiffany and I ran a 5K in Payson, UT. I was still trying to get over being sick and had a nasty cough but attempted it anyway. It was at 7 in the morning and kind of cold, but I'm glad we did it. I really enjoyed getting the exercise and can't wait to do another one.

Russell Family Reunion

Kevin, Baby Cory, my mom, and I just got back from an adventurous trip to the Russell Family Reunion in Jackson Hole, WY. We spent 4 days with my mom's side of the family doing everything from white water rafting (without Cory) to hiking in the rain (with Cory).
Day 1: We packed an insane amount of stuff into my car (who knew a baby required so much stuff for only a 4 day trip!) and headed up to Jackson. Cory was amazing and slept most of the drive up. We stopped at an interesting diner near Preston, ID for lunch and reached our cozy little cabin just in time to meet up with the family for dinner at Mountain High Pizza Pies.
Cabins:

Day 2: Kevin and I left Cory with mom (thanks mom!) and went white water rafting with a ton of our extended family. I was a bit apprehensive to leave my tiny little guy for 3+ hours, and worried the entire drive to where we dropped into the river; I feel a bit guilty to admit this, but once we got on the water I actually forgot I had a baby for a little while. It was so relaxing and fun. The weather was perfect, and we enjoyed seeing a few bald eagles on our trek down the Snake River.

That evening we attended the main event of the reunion at a park in Jackson. We enjoyed good food and great company! Cory sported his new hat that I think he is absolutely adorable in.

This was my first trip to Jackson Hole, so we strolled around downtown and of course Kevin had to get a picture in front of one of the huge arch of elk sheds.

Day 3: We drove to Jenny Lake and on the way we saw a huge bull moose! Then we took an exciting boat ride across the lake with my sister Aimee and her family, my mom, and my cousin Celesta and her family. I thought the boat ride would be an easy pontoon boat kind of a ride, but the boat was more like a speed boat that sprayed everyone on board as it made its way to the other side of the lake. Everyone was ducking down and I was like..."I can't believe I have my 7 week old baby on this thing right now." We managed to keep Cory dry, but when we got off the boat and onto the dock, we found ourselves in a tricky situation. Cory woke up starving and there were no facilities. Kevin took Cory in his arms (the trail was way to rough for a stroller) and we hiked up the trail and found a "good" spot where I could sit and nurse. We had 10 minutes till the next boat of people arrived. Once Cory was enjoying his lunch, a MILLION mosquitos took full advantage of our situation. They were swarming everywhere!!! Kevin and mom tried to keep them off of me and Cory, while not getting eaten alive in the process. Once Cory's belly was full, we pressed on. With most of the mosquitos behind us I thought we could finally enjoy the hike, but then came the rain. Poor Kevin hiked with Cory in his arms, holding an umbrella. Cory was such a good sport, but after a while, we decided to turn back. It was a bit disappointing to not finish the entire hike, but you can only put a baby through so much. We warmed up in the car before heading to Old Faithful.

Next we headed to Old Faithful and met up with a bunch of the family in time to watch the geyser go!

We enjoyed seeing Old Faithful as well as the neat geysers surrounding it. We spent the next 2 nights in West Yellowstone. The sink in this motel was tiny, but Cory was able to barely fit. Here's a nice shot of me looking quite silly while talking to him:

Day 4: We spent the entire day touring Yellowstone and saw a ton of buffalo, some antelope, deer, and elk. There was quite possibly a bear, but it was so far away we couldn't be completely sure. I enjoyed the geysers, hot springs and mud pots, but I LOVED seeing Yellowstone's Grand Canyon and the upper and lower falls. We live in such a magnificent world and I love all of the beautiful diversity we have to enjoy.

Cory was such a good little guy the entire trip and only gave us a hard time the last 2 hours of the drive back home. This trip was a lot of work, but we really enjoyed spending time family we seldom see and exploring the beauty of west!

I just knew I would love having a baby in the summer! Cory loves to go for walks in the stroller, and yesterday we walked to a local park and had a picnic with Grandma and Grandpa Bird, Aunt Holly, and cousins Kaden and Nicolas. Cory enjoyed relaxing in the stroller.

Of course we think Cory is the most beautiful baby to ever have been born, but the poor little guy is struggling in a few departments lately. He was born with a head full of hair, but now is sporting a nice receding hairline. He also has acne worse than I did when I was 15. I jokingly told Kev that he's starting to look like Benjamin Button, and now it's become our little joke. Hey if he grows up to look like Brad Pitt... I wouldn't be too upset or surprised- just look at his hottie parents.

We are having such a fun 4th of July! Cory woke up at 6am for a feeding, so Kevin and I decided to go to a 7am flag raising breakfast that our church was having since we were already up and going. It was really early, and as soon as we got home Cory and I took a little nap. Then it was on to the Provo Parade. I was all stressed out about the loud sirens, marching bands, etc, but Cory slept through the entire thing. I really need to just relax.
We've spent the rest of the day at Mom and Dad Birds hanging out. For dinner we enjoyed a backyard BBQ with smores for dessert. Cory has been a little angel all day long.

New Kid on The Block

Sixteen days, over 120 diapers, 3 packages of wipes, 20+ loads of laundry, over 50 middle of the night feedings, 3 trips to the pediatrician, 1 clogged tear duct, 3 minor mommy melt downs, a case of mastitis, and the entire extended version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy later .....and I've finally found the time and ambition to update our blog. Kevin and I have been slam dunked into the wonderful world of parenthood. So far we make quite the team.
I was induced on May 28th (delivered the 29th) because our baby's heart rate was dropping with my contractions during a non-stress test at the hospital. The staff told me I wasn't going home until the baby was out. The doctor strongly recommended a c-section, but after a blessing and many prayers, I was able to by-pass the c-section and our baby's heart rate never dropped again. Baby Bird arrived after about 12 hours of labor and only 30 minutes of pushing. He had the darndest cone head you ever did see, and the NICU team had to rush in to help him out at first, but he is doing amazing now. He is the spitting image of his daddy and we adore him already. He was 19 inches long and 6lbs 11oz at birth, and at his 2 week appointment he was 7lbs 11oz and 20.5 inches long. He is growing so fast- too fast!

Back in mid May, we celebrated my 26th birthday. Usually I'm so excited for my birthday, but this year my thoughts have been on a different "Birth" day.

With three days until the "due date" we can't help but feel anxious and impatient. We are preparing for our little guy to be late, just to better handle the disappointment of the due date coming and going. We still are full of hope that our little guy will make his appearance sooner than later. Mom Whitesell flew in on Monday and we are enjoying spending time with her. Aimee and Heather will be here Wednesday for a few day visit. Our house is completely ready for the baby, and the hospital bag is packed. We know our lives are about to drastically change and it is the most exciting and scary feeling on earth.
The weather in Utah is beautiful right now and Kevin and I just spent the morning up Maple Canyon hiking around. We really enjoyed spending some time together and appreciating the beautiful world around us. We are in a truly amazing stage of our lives. We know the trials of life must be right around the corner, but things seem so perfect, so calm, so surreal right now. Last night I had a few friends over for dinner, and it was just what I needed. We ate, laughed and chatted the night away. Meleana and Darah brought their new baby boys who are 5 and 7 weeks old. It was so fun to hold them, and I can't wait for them to meet my little guy.

2009 NBA Drive to the Finals

I'm currently ranked 353 in the nation in the 2009 Drive to the Finals NBA Fantasy Basketball league. I have 660 points so far and am in the 98% overall percentile. Funny thing is...I don't really like NBA basketball all that much. I don't follow the games or the players. In fact if my co-workers didn't tell me that being ranked 353 in the nation was good...I would have no clue. My player picks are mere guesses (with some guidance from a co-worker), but I seem to be on a roll. Hey...maybe I'll actually win the $25,000 towards the car!

I had my 37 week check up this week, and learned I am 50% effaced, but have not started to dilate yet. The baby is at a -2 station. I was a bit disappointed to not be dilated at all, but at least I'm effacing. I'm trying to appreciate the final weeks of this pregnancy and feel guilty when I complain about it. I really have had it easy. I love feeling his movements, even when his hiccups keep me awake at night, or when I feel like he is pushing against my skin so hard that he may actually thrash his way out of me. I love talking to him when no one else is around. I'm constantly praying for his well being. I'm feeling really great for being this far along, but am growing more and more anxious to meet him. I’m consumed with how life will be in a few weeks from now, and I love to just stand in the nursery and look at all of the baby stuff. I day dream about holding him, dressing him, feeding him, rocking him and even changing all of those inevitable diapers. It's amazing how much I already love him.

Babymoon

In April, Kevin and I went to Saint George with our friends Brock, Brooke, and their cute kiddos. We drove through a snow storm the entire way from Springville to Cedar City and then right as we got to St. George the sun came out and stayed out for the entire weekend. We were able to go and do a short hike in Leeds, UT and then went and played around on Dixie Rock. There is this really tight slot canyon called “the crack” that everyone shimmied through, but me. The pregnant belly couldn’t fit. I told Kevin that after the baby is born we are going back down there and I’m going to fit through that crack….if I get stuck then I’ll stay wedged there until I lose enough weight to fit. I don’t think he knows I’m really serious about this. : ) It was the perfect “Babymoon” for us, and was our last getaway before our lives change forever.

“World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions”

My birthday is in May, and Kevin bought us tickets to go see the “World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions" as an early birthday present to me. He saw the show advertised on his way to work one day and was thoughtful enough to know it would be something I’d enjoy. Well, the show was last night and we both really enjoyed it. The horses were so beautiful and their performances were truly amazing. Here are some pictures I tried to take, but if you really want to see what it was like, go to the Lipizzaner website.

In April, Mom and Dad Whitesell flew out for a quick visit. It was so fun to have them here. We took them down to the Little Sahara Sand Dunes for some fun on the four-wheelers. I got a hold of the camera and took a ton of great pictures of my beautiful mother!

So funny story....
On Wednesday night I was at our church for a youth activity. At the end of the night a bunch of the kids started a game of full-court basketball in the gym, and I can't stand missing out on a fun game of ball. I slipped off my clogs and started playing in my socks. I'll let you watch the video to get a better idea of what happened next, but be aware of a few differences/similarities....

1) The guy in the video is not pregnant - I am 6 1/2 months pregnant
2) The guy yelled profanities - I kept my profanities to myself and smiled
3)The guy didn't have an audience - About 30 people witnessed me fall
4) The guy slipped on ice - I slipped on a slippery gym floor, wearing socks
5)The guy thought he was really cool - I thought I was really cool
6) The guy landed flat on his back - I landed flat on my back
7) It's funny to watch this guy eat it - I'm sure the entire youth group thought it was funny to watch me eat it

Kevin surprised me with these BEAUTIFUL flowers! The best was the sweet message he wrote in the card. He truly is the man of my dreams; not because he is thoughtful enough to send me flowers the day before V-day, but because of everything he does for me each and every day. He always asks me how my day was and then really listens to my response. He always is willing to get out of bed to do things like adjust the thermostat or get me a drink of water. Whenever I'm being moody, bratty or acting completely crazy, he remains so patient and kind. Almost every night he will rub my feet, which is my favorite thing in the world! He helps me to be a better person and supports me in all of my goals and dreams. The bottom line is....
I'm completely in love with him!
